What Proof Should I Show My Employer If I’ve Applied for a PGWP?
Hey everyone,
I’m in the final stretch of my program and just applied for my PGWP. I’ve heard from a few people that some employers are now saying, “No permit, no start date,” even though I’ve submitted my application and am still legally allowed to work under my student status—so long as I’ve maintained my status throughout.
I’m wondering what kind of proof I should actually provide to HR or my employer to show I’m authorized to work while waiting for my PGWP. I know the official IRCC page says you can work full-time during the application period if you’ve maintained your status, but I’m not sure what documents to pull together that would satisfy a skeptical employer.
From what I’ve gathered, here’s what might help:
- A copy of my PGWP application submission confirmation (the receipt or online confirmation page)
- Proof I’ve completed my program (like my official graduation letter or transcript)
- My current study permit with a valid work permit condition (if applicable)
- Any recent proof of maintained status (like my last study permit, visa, or entry stamp)
But I’ve seen some confusion online—some employers want the actual PGWP, even though they’re not supposed to. So, what do you actually hand over? Should I include a one-page timeline showing my application date, graduation date, and status maintenance?
Also, what details do you think matter most to employers? Is it the application date, the confirmation number, or something else?
I’d love to hear how others are handling this—what’s the first thing you’d check or show if you were in my shoes?
