Does My Canadian College Application Need a WES or School-Specific Evaluation?

I’ve been going through the application process for a few colleges in Canada and keep running into confusion about credential evaluations. Some schools say they accept WES, others require their own evaluation through a different provider or even a school-specific process. I’m not sure how to navigate this—especially since I’ve seen people mix up immigration ECA requirements with admissions evaluations.

For example, I know WES is commonly used for immigration, but does that mean it’s automatically accepted for college admissions too? From what I’ve gathered, it depends entirely on the institution. Some colleges explicitly list WES as an accepted provider, while others only accept evaluations from their own designated partners or require a direct submission from a third party.

I’m trying to figure out the practical steps:
- How do I confirm whether my target college accepts a WES evaluation?
- If a school doesn’t accept WES, do I need to pay for a separate evaluation, or can I get the same report from another provider they accept?
- Are there any differences in how translations are handled—especially if my documents aren’t in English or French?
- How far in advance should I start the evaluation process? I’ve heard timelines can stretch out, especially during peak seasons.

It’s also unclear whether the format of the evaluation matters—like, does a “course-by-course” report from WES meet the same standards as one done by the school? Or is there a difference in how they’re interpreted during admissions?

I’d love to hear from others who’ve been through this. What was your first step when applying? What did you check first—school policy, evaluation provider, translation rules, or something else? And what details ended up being most important in the end?

Let’s share what worked (or didn’t) so we can all avoid the same pitfalls.
