How to Share Your IRCC Application Timeline Without Risking Your Privacy
Hey everyone,
I’ve seen a few posts lately where folks are sharing their IRCC application timelines—like when they submitted documents, got requests, or received decisions. It’s super helpful to see how long things took, especially when you're trying to estimate your own wait times. But I’ve also noticed some people accidentally sharing passport scans, UCI numbers, or even full names and birthdates.
We all want to help each other, but we also need to protect our personal info. IRCC has made it clear that sharing sensitive details publicly can increase the risk of identity theft or fraud. So, I wanted to start a quick chat on how we can still share useful timeline info while staying safe.
Here’s what I’ve been doing:
- Only sharing month and year (e.g., “Submitted in March 2024”)
- Redacting any personal identifiers—no passport numbers, UCI, or bank details
- Using placeholders like “ ” or “ ” instead of real details
- Avoiding screenshots that show full application portals or personal dashboards
It’s totally possible to give a helpful update without exposing yourself. For example, instead of posting a full screen with your name and UCI, you could say:
“Submitted my Express Entry profile in April 2024. Got an ITA in July. Then submitted my documents in August. Final decision came in November.”
That gives a solid timeline without any risk.
So I’m curious—what do you check first when sharing your own journey?
1. What’s the one piece of info you’d never share, even if it’s just a date?
2. How do you balance being helpful with staying private?
3. Are there any specific document types or milestones you always redact, no matter what?
Would love to hear how others are handling this. Let’s keep the community supportive *and* safe.
