What happens if my employer cuts my hours on a closed work permit?

I’m on an employer-specific work permit in Ontario, and lately my hours have been cut to 20 per week. The job was supposed to be full-time, and I’ve been told the company is restructuring. I’m worried—what happens to my status now?

My permit says I can only work for this employer, at this location, in this role. I’ve saved all my employment contracts, pay stubs, and recent emails about the schedule changes. I know I can’t just start working somewhere else, but I also don’t want to lose my status or risk overstaying.

Here’s what I’m trying to figure out:

1. If my hours drop below 20 per week, is there a risk of losing my work permit status?

2. Can I apply to change employers while my current job is unstable, or do I need to wait until I’ve been laid off?

3. Are there any protections if my employer becomes abusive or starts violating labor laws?

4. How do I plan for PR eligibility when my job is this uncertain?

I’ve read that “status is tied to the job” with closed permits, and that’s really stressing me out. I’ve been here 10 months and was counting on this role to help with my permanent residency pathway. But what if the company shuts down or keeps cutting hours?

If you’re in a similar situation—working on an employer-specific permit, worried about job changes, or thinking about switching employers—please share your experience.

Just to keep things safe: no passport numbers, UCI, or bank details, please. Let’s talk about your province, your current work permit type, and your timeline (e.g., “in process for PR,” “waiting on job offer,” etc.). Your story might help someone else breathe easier.

If your employer reduces your hours on a closed work permit, your permit remains valid only as long as you're still employed under the original conditions. However, a significant drop in hours (like below 20 per week) may affect your ability to meet the "employment" requirement for maintaining status, especially if you're relying on that job for eligibility.

Check your job offer letter and the conditions on your work permit — if it specifies a minimum number of hours, going below that could put you out of compliance. Also, confirm whether your employer has updated the LMIA or submitted a new job offer; if not, your reduced hours may not align with the permit’s terms.

A common pitfall is assuming that any employment is sufficient — IRCC expects you to be working as described in the original application. If you’re now working fewer hours, you may need to apply for a new work permit or consider changing your status.

To give you better advice, could you share: your province, your current immigration status (e.g., study permit holder, temporary resident), and how long ago the hours were reduced? Please don’t include your ID numbers or personal details.
