Why Is My Application Taking So Long?

I’ve been waiting over 6 months for my study permit, and the IRCC tracker says "average processing time is 4 weeks." I know the average isn’t a guarantee, but it’s hard not to feel stuck when the system seems so inconsistent.

A few months ago, someone in my Facebook group got approved in 3 weeks. Another friend in the same province got a refusal after 5 months. I’ve checked my status twice a week. I’ve double-checked my documents, submitted all required forms, and even followed up with IRCC once. Still no update.

This is where it gets tricky. Processing times vary wildly based on location, program type, application completeness, and even background checks. The official stats are averages—useful for trends, not personal predictions. So here’s what I’m wondering:

1. How do you stay calm when your case is outside the average window?

2. What’s your strategy for checking status without obsessing?

3. Have you noticed regional differences in processing speed for your province or city?

4. What’s the first thing you do when you hit a 3+ month wait with no update?

I’ve started preparing for the next step—like organizing my post-approval documents and researching co-op options—just in case. It helps me feel more in control, even if I can’t control the timeline.

If you’re in a similar spot, I’d love to hear your experience.

Please share your province, program type (study/work/PR), and how long your application has been in process.

No need to share passport numbers, UCI, or bank details—just keep it safe and general.

Let’s compare notes and see if we can spot patterns, not panic.

It’s common for processing times to vary, especially if your application was submitted during peak periods or if additional checks are needed. First, check if your application is still in “in-progress” status—sometimes delays happen due to missing documents or incomplete forms, even if you’ve already submitted everything.

Make sure your application is linked to the correct province and program (e.g., Express Entry vs. Provincial Nominee). The province you applied to can significantly affect processing times—some provinces process faster than others. Also, if you’re applying under a program with a backlog (like certain PNP streams), that can add months.

A common pitfall is not responding to requests for additional documents in time. If IRCC sent a request, missing the deadline can restart the clock.

To help narrow it down: Could you share your province of application, your current application status (e.g., submitted, under review), and when you applied? Please don’t post personal IDs like your IRCC number or date of birth.
