Moving to a small town? Watch out for hidden costs
I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately—especially with so many newcomers looking to cut costs. Big cities are expensive, no doubt, but swapping Toronto or Vancouver for a smaller town isn’t always a clear win. I’ve seen people save on rent, only to struggle with longer commutes, fewer job options, or hard-to-reach doctors.
I’m not saying small towns aren’t worth it—many are great. But the trade-offs matter. For example, even if rent is half the price, what if your job search takes longer because local employers aren’t hiring in your field? Or if you need to drive 45 minutes just to see a specialist?
Also, public transit in smaller areas is often limited or nonexistent. That means you might end up needing a car, which adds insurance, gas, and maintenance—costs that can quickly eat up your savings. And if you’re a student or new to the workforce, finding part-time jobs nearby can be tough.
So here’s what I’m wondering: How much do you really save when you move out of the city? Have you found that healthcare access or job opportunities in your small town are as good as you expected? And what’s your biggest challenge—transportation, work, or something else?
Curious to hear from others who’ve made the move. What’s your experience been like? What surprised you the most?
