Ontario’s ‘As of Right’ Framework Now Live: Work Permit Path in 10 Days
Ontario’s new ‘As of Right’ framework for international graduates is officially active, opening a fast-track path to post-study work permits. If you completed a qualifying program at a designated learning institution in Ontario, you may now qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) without needing a job offer or LMIA.
The key change? The 10-day processing window for PGWP applications submitted under this framework. This is a major shift from previous wait times, which often stretched beyond 12 weeks. The 10-day timeline applies only to eligible programs and applicants who meet the framework’s specific criteria.
To qualify, your program must be at least eight months long, delivered in person, and fall within a list of approved occupations tied to Ontario’s labour market needs. The province has prioritized tech, healthcare, skilled trades, and engineering roles. You must also have completed your studies in Ontario and not have previously held a PGWP.
It’s important to note this isn’t automatic for all Ontario graduates. The framework is selective and focused on aligning with provincial economic priorities. If your program is on the approved list and you meet all conditions, you can apply directly to IRCC under this new pathway.
Applicants should still prepare strong documentation—proof of graduation, study permit, transcript, and program details. Even with the fast track, incomplete applications will still be delayed. The 10-day processing clock starts when IRCC receives a complete application.
This change benefits students who want to stay and work in Ontario quickly, especially those in high-demand fields. It also gives institutions and employers a clearer way to retain talent after graduation.
If you’re planning to study in Ontario or are already here, how does this affect your timeline? Did you apply under this framework, or are you waiting on a traditional PGWP? Share your experience—what program, province, and next steps are you considering?
