Valid US Visa? Getting a Canadian Visitor Visa Is Easier Than You Think

If you already hold a valid US visa, applying for a Canadian visitor visa may be significantly easier than going through the standard process. IRCC does offer a simplified pathway for US visa holders, and you can receive a multiple-entry visa valid for up to 10 years.

Here is how it works: IRCC considers a valid US visa as a strong positive factor when evaluating Canadian visitor visa applications. Having passed the United States' rigorous background checks — including interviews, security screening, and financial verification — signals to Canadian immigration officers that you are a low-risk traveller.

In practice, US visa holders see three clear advantages. Processing times are noticeably shorter — while standard Canadian visitor visa applications may take 4-8 weeks or longer, US visa holders often receive results within 2-3 weeks. Approval rates are higher because the US vetting process already demonstrated that your documentation is solid and your intentions are clear. Visa validity periods tend to be longer, with US visa holders frequently receiving up to 10 years or until passport expiry, compared to single-entry or shorter validity for standard applicants.

Important considerations: your US visa must be currently valid — an expired or revoked US visa provides no advantage. Even with a US visa, you still need to submit complete supporting documents including financial proof, travel itinerary, and evidence of ties to your home country. The US visa is an advantage, not a guarantee.

This pathway works well for Canadian tourism or short business visits, travelers who have obtained a US visa but not yet visited Canada, transit passengers flying through the US to reach Canada, and business professionals who want both US and Canadian visas.

The application process is straightforward: submit your visitor visa application online, declare your US visa information truthfully in the form, and upload a scan of your US visa page as supporting documentation. Standard materials like bank statements and employment letters are prepared normally.

If your US visa is a 10-year multiple-entry, mention this in your Canadian application — immigration officers are more likely to issue a similarly long validity period.
